Beautiful Girl Claraby  her mom, Kirsten

Clara is a kind and generous person, always thinking of others, whose enthusiasm and joy for life is shared with all who know her. She’s eleven and lives in Ontario.

She is passionate about so many things, from highland dance to cross country skiing… but nothing more than baking. She’s worked hard learning technical aspects of baking to produce consistently delicious bakes, and now uses her own ideas and techniques to make them beautiful.

In addition to baking (both creating and eating), some of her other favorite things include Taylor Swift music (especially Folklore and Evermore), musical theater (Hamilton, Hadestown, In the Heights, Dear Evan Hansen), camping, playing piano, playing basketball, babysitting, and birding! She loves reading, both for learning and for enjoyment (Land of Stories, Harry Potter).

Last year, Clara was diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Following the diagnosis, there were weeks when she had bloodwork taken numerous times, then more needles for her injection of medications and immunizations.

Staff at the lab and hospital commented on Clara’s maturity and courage. She decided she wanted to take responsibility for her chronic health issues by attending appointments for some tests, such as X-rays, on her own. Her next step is learning how to inject her medication herself, another challenge that she is facing with courage.

Despite dealing with pain and swelling in her joints, including her ankles and feet, Clara continued to participate in many activities.

She played in a soccer tournament with her school and ran in the city cross-country meet. Unfortunately, her arthritis continued to progress and she couldn’t participate in her highland dance Christmas concert, but she still attended the concert and supported her dance community. Thankfully, her arthritis is now better controlled, so she is able to be active again with much less pain.

Clara is dedicated to social justice issues, and she calls out behaviors and actions that she feels are unjust. She is an inspiration to those who know her, showing positivity in the face of adversity.
